Keep all your regularly scheduled asthma appointments, regardless of how you are feeling. It is impossible to predict the next attack. Furthermore, newer or safer asthma medications may be approved in the time since you last visited your doctor.
If you are having an asthma attack (mild or moderate), you need to try to force air out of the lungs. Breathe out aggressively, as hard as you can. Really force that air out of your lungs! Follow this by breathing in three times quickly, and a fourth time deeply to ensure your lungs are filled to capacity, then exhale again as forcefully as possible. Not only will you breathe in rhythm, but you’ll focus more intently on how you are breathing and become aware of breathing problems. It also pushes the air out of your lungs, so that more air can come in. You might cough hard or create mucus, but its just a sign your breathing is getting back to normal. Anyone with asthma should stay far away from smoke. Smoking can actually trigger an asthma attack. Stay away from cigarette smoke, fumes, and vapors as much as you can. All of those things can trigger and aggravate asthma symptoms. If someone is smoking around you, you have every right to nicely ask them to not to.
